Lead Data Engineer

Location: Omaha, Nebraska; Onsite

Reports To: Sr. Manager of Data Engineering

Capstone IT is helping a premier client to hire an experienced Lead Data Engineer to lead the development and optimization of robust data pipelines that support business intelligence, analytics, and operational systems. In this high-impact role, you'll take ownership of ETL/ELT workflows and cloud data solutions, ensuring accuracy, scalability, and efficiency across our data environment. You'll collaborate across departments to translate data needs into reliable technical solutions, serve as a mentor to junior engineers, and help shape the future of their data architecture.

This role combines hands-on engineering with strategic leadership, giving you the opportunity to influence everything from pipeline performance to architectural decisions to team growth. You will operate as a technical expert, a cross-functional partner, and a production support lead, directly contributing to business-critical decisions.

Top Skills:

• 10 years of experience in ETL/ELT development (Informatica, DataStage, DBT)
• Advanced SQL programming (8 10 years)
• Strong Python or shell scripting skills (8 10 years)
• 5+ years of experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
• Expertise in data warehousing, dimensional and relational modeling
• Strong database performance tuning and optimization
• Proven leadership in mentoring, task delegation, and cross-team collaboration
• Agile methodology experience preferred

What You'll Do:

• Design, develop, and maintain ETL/ELT workflows to support structured and semi-structured data ingestion into data warehouses and operational data stores.
• Work closely with developers, analysts, and business partners to understand data requirements, define transformation logic, and deliver production-ready solutions.
• Guide junior engineers by providing technical direction, performing code reviews, and modeling best practices for performance and maintainability.
• Perform source-to-target mapping, data profiling, and transformation validation to uphold data quality across systems.
• Lead production support efforts, troubleshoot critical issues, and oversee deployment through change management processes.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field with 10+ years of experience; or Master's with 8+ years; or equivalent practical experience
• Deep experience with data warehousing, ETL/ELT tools, and cloud-based data platforms
• Strong scripting and programming ability in Python or shell
• Proven ability to lead and collaborate in Agile teams
• Strong communication skills and a customer-focused mindset
